In 1998, while still an undergraduate studying law at Lagos State University, Tara Fela-Durotoye noticed a completely neglected market: African women desired cosmetics formulated specifically for their skin tones and climate.
Starting from a modest room with just a makeup brush set, she founded House of Tara, initiating what would become the continent's premier indigenous beauty and makeup artistry company.
Beyond manufacturing products, House of Tara established Nigeria's very first makeup academy, empowering tens of thousands of young female beauty entrepreneurs with certified vocational independence.
Over 25 years later, the enterprise operates dozens of retail branches across Africa, establishing an institutional benchmark for female-led retail franchises. Her philosophy centres on multiplying leadership: ensuring every employee and academy graduate gains the ownership mindset necessary to scale sustainable ventures.
